Legislators make fools of themselves arguing for cannabis prohibition
G13 Magazine always works to keep its readers up to date on efforts at cannabis law reform or legalization in both the United States and around the world. As the march towards legalization has now seen 37 American states legalize cannabis, legislators in the other states where cannabis is still illegal are resorting to some comically desperate, attempts to justify why cannabis should remain illegal.
Minnesota is one of the states currently considering legalizing cannabis.
During a debate on the issue in the Minnesota legislature, one conservative said that cannabis should remain illegal because legalizing it would lead to job losses. Now, you might be thinking at this point he meant that there would be less cops on the street if cannabis was illegal. However, that’s not what he meant. He was concerned that legalizing cannabis would lead to less jobs for police dogs around Minnesota.
That’s right. Police dogs. Never mind the fact that the dogs who don’t become drug-sniffers could be trained to become therapy dogs or service dogs for the disabled and still lead a very productive life. They could also be friendly pets for happy homes. Surely, there can be a way that we can have a common-sense cannabis policy while taking care that all the Belgian Malinois and German Shepherds being bred for police work have something to do.
The idea that this representative thinks that actual human beings should continue to be sent to jail so that there is job security for police dogs illustrates just how little he values human life. It’s even more frustrating that these kinds of poorly thought out arguments in favor of cannabis prohibition are being made by lawmakers; people who are supposed to be leading our government.
